Getting Your Kid Out of the House and Into a Job Ebook

adult children land a job.

Here’s a straightforward guide for parents of adult children who are looking for jobs. Whether your child is 15 or 50, parents have a hard time knowing what role to play in their child’s search for work. Getting Your Kid Out of the House and Into a Job is a roadmap for parents…and there’s some pretty good advice for the kids too. Available for immediate download (in PDF format, file size 675 KB) for $28.00.  If you are ready to buy and don’t want to read any further, you can just click the Add to Cart button to purchase.  If you’d like to read more about what other readers are saying or to learn more about the authors, page down.

Getting Your Kid Out of the House and Into a Job has valuable advice for graduates, wheel spinners who’ve finished their basic education and those who are under or unemployed. Further I found it useful for high school grads who are taking courses, but may need part-time work. Having the guts to make the argument that telling your child they can do anything he/she wants is unrealistic and unhelpful was commendable. I’ve seen the damage firsthand that this belief does to managers. They grow up in a fantasy world thinking they shouldn’t have to deal with or don’t know how to deal with adversity, unfairness and the limits all of us have. This is just one of the many important issues you tackle. I really thought the realistic, no-fluff approach to the book was terrific. Are you a parent caught up in your child’s job search?

Do you wish you had some guidance or some perspective on what your role should be and how you can help?

Getting Your Kid Out of the House and Into a Job is a new e-book by Joyce Richman and Barbara Demarest. Part workbook and part stories and examples, Getting Your Kid Out offers parents and their children a roadmap for navigating the tough transition from school to career.Starting with “The Mechanics of Job-Hunting,” parents are reminded of the three-step process their children should be engaging in to successfully land a job that fits:

  • Step One – Creating a Professional Identity
  • Step Two – Understanding the Job Market
  • Step Three – Pursuing the Job Proactively

Each section includes exercises for parents and ways you can help. We also tell you things you should not be doing! The second half of the book goes “Beyond the Mechanics” to delve into common issues with adult job-seeking children, including what to do:

  • When they don’t know what they want to do
  • When you’re worried about their dreams or their ability to achieve them.
  • When they have too many interests and don’t know where to start.
  • When your dreams and theirs get mixed up.
  • When they lack confidence.
  • When they pick up unintended messages.
  • When they seem to be in no hurry to be independent or you aren’t sure if they are ready.
  • When they’re in too much of a hurry.
  • When they don’t seem to understand about “being professional.”
  • When it’s hard to talk to them about work and career.

And just when you think you’re done, the Appendix lays out several pages of instructions just on how to create an elevator pitch – not just for your kid, but for you as a parent. What’s your pitch? What are you saying when your neighbor asks what your child is up to? Are you helping or hurting your child’s job-hunting process?

I received your offer this morning and promptly bought and downloaded your book. Am I ever impressed! The format is very accessible AND professional. The writing is crisp, engaging, and focused. I loved the format for that timeline exercise (handwriting on notepaper, no less!) and you use it not only to teach how to do it but how to analyze the results. I loved all the stories sprinkled throughout the book…..they keep it fresh and relevant and they make your points so well: don’t push, focus on abilities and interests, set expectations….Typically, I hate reading stuff online but your format and type face (with color and breaks in the style) make it much more palatable. Most of all, it’s obvious how much wisdom you offer in these pages. Your experience and skill comes through and I can’t wait to send this to all the job hunters/parents I know.
